Tigers: a thin lineup behind an uncertain arm
Keider Montero is listed as the probable starter, but the Tigers gave him extra rest after he did not recover normally from his last outing. A.J. Hinch said the club is paying close attention to that recovery, and no fresh report has confirmed a normal side session since. MLB.com
Even if Montero takes the ball, his better starts depend on location and defense rather than swing-and-miss. His recent scoreless outing against Cleveland came without a strikeout.
The Tigers' lineup will not offer much margin for error. Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, Matt Vierling, Parker Meadows and Wenceel Pérez are all out, leaving a youthful group to handle Snell.
Dodgers: Snell's stuff is back, and the offense has power
Blake Snell is listed as the probable starter after elbow surgery, and the early returns are strong. He has said the procedure relieved discomfort and numbness, giving him the best feel he has had in three years. FOX Sports
The run-scoring case belongs to the Dodgers lineup. Ohtani and Freeman anchor a left-handed group, Kyle Tucker is expected back after his planned rest, and Max Muncy tests a pitcher's patience.
The Dodgers were swept in Atlanta, but the losses were narrow and tied to bullpen and defensive mistakes rather than a dead offense. Their problem has been converting traffic, not creating it.
Comerica Park rewards contact and coverage
Comerica plays more in the gaps than over the fence, and a day game near 80 degrees can add some carry. The Tigers are missing much of their regular outfield coverage, and the Dodgers have been using a replacement option in center.
That combination matters against a contact-heavy starter like Montero. Line drives that are not cut off can become extra bases in a hurry.
Why the Dodgers' team total is the sharper angle
The full-game moneyline asks too much of a road team with bullpen questions, and the run line leaves too much room for one-run variance. The cleaner case is to isolate the Dodgers' offense against Detroit's uncertain starter and compromised relief depth.
Brant Hurter remains unavailable and Will Vest is out for the season, so an early Montero exit would push the game onto a less proven relief group. Snell limiting the Tigers does not change that equation.
The main risk is that Montero can survive on weak contact for five or six innings, as he did against Cleveland. Los Angeles has also left runners in scoring position too often against live fastballs.
Risk: Montero has a scoreless-contact gear, and the Dodgers have missed chances against fastballs. If he works deep, the team total becomes far less comfortable.
