The San Diego Padres have a wild-card race to run and a vulnerable pitching plan in front of them. The Washington Nationals are offering a chain of arms rather than one established starter, which gives the Padres all night to find a weak link.
Padres need patient at-bats, not a quick knockout
The Padres have steadied themselves with consecutive narrow wins, including Monday’s series opener. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado created traffic, while Jackson Merrill supplied the decisive runs and took away extra bases in the outfield.
That game also showed the unfinished part of the report: the Padres did not add meaningful insurance after the early innings. Against a planned bullpen game, their better route is to extend counts, force pitching changes and keep pressure on unfamiliar hold times with the running game.
Casey Mize is listed as the probable starter for the Padres, though his recent form has been uneven. His right ankle sprain did not prevent him from returning on September 2, but mlb.com previously reported reduced velocity and movement when the injury occurred.
The Padres used Kyle Hart, Bradgley Rodríguez, Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller in the opener. Those workloads were modest, and Randy Vásquez offers multi-inning coverage, but the preferred leverage chain already has some mileage on it.
Nationals are trying to build nine innings from spare parts
Riley Cornelio is listed to start for the Nationals, but this is not a conventional assignment. Blake Butera confirmed to mlb.com that Cornelio would open “in a bullpen game,” adding, “We’re just going to have to piece it together.”
The identity of the first pitcher matters less than the structure behind him. If Cornelio is inefficient, the Nationals may need extended work from an inexperienced group that was already described as stretched before the series.
Orlando Ribalta’s placement on the injured list with forearm inflammation removes a trusted matchup arm, particularly against left-handed hitters. That complicates the plan for Merrill and Jake Cronenworth while leaving less-established relievers to navigate Tatis, Machado, Ty France and Xander Bogaerts.
The Nationals still have dangerous bats in James Wood, CJ Abrams and Dylan Crews, who homered in the opener. Their current emphasis, however, is evaluating young players, and the pitching staff carries the unmistakable look of a September audition.
Warm Petco air meets a wind blowing back
First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 PM ET, with unusual heat lingering as twilight gives way to full night. Temperatures around 84–86°F could help firm contact carry, but a northwest wind should work inward from center and left-center.
Petco Park’s deeper gaps still reward line drives, speed and outfield positioning more than lazy fly balls. Rain is not a concern, and the short turnaround before Wednesday’s afternoon finale adds another reason for the Nationals to avoid wasting available arms.
The Padres get several chances to find the wrong reliever
The appeal of the Padres’ team total is repetition. Cornelio is only the opening piece, Ribalta is unavailable, and each pitching change creates another chance to attack an inexperienced arm before the Nationals can settle into a favorable matchup.
A different opener would change the first look, not the underlying architecture. The Padres can reach this number through walks, gap contact and baserunning pressure without requiring a home-run parade in a park that rarely hands those out for free.
Petco’s dimensions, the inward wind and the Padres’ recent trouble adding insurance are the clear risks. Those factors make the run line less dependable, but they do not erase the weakness of a stretched bullpen asked to cover most of the game.
