Athletics’ short-start risk gives Angels the cleaner card on September 22

The Athletics are home from a winless trip with much of their intended lineup missing. The Los Angeles Angels arrive with their own flaws, but their route through nine innings looks cleaner.

Athletics are asking the supporting cast to carry the order

The Athletics have no postseason route and are beginning their final home week after an East Coast swing. They showed some fight in Cleveland, but late traffic went unrewarded and the frustration has begun to show.

The larger problem is personnel. Brent Rooker, Nick Kurtz, Tyler Soderstrom and Jacob Wilson are out for the season, stripping away much of the lineup’s intended power and on-base foundation, as detailed by mlb.com.

Shea Langeliers is active after right meniscus surgery, but he is limited to designated-hitter duty and will not catch again this season. Henry Bolte has supplied steady table-setting work, while Zack Gelof and Langeliers are among the right-handed bats needed against a left-handed starter.

Brady Basso is listed to start, though his role remains less settled than that of a conventional rotation arm. Manager Mark Kotsay described the arrangement plainly: “We’re going to use Basso to start the game. He’ll be listed as a starter, and we’ll manage the game accordingly,” per mlb.com.

Basso works with a broad mix built around low-90s fastballs, a cutter and a changeup rather than overpowering velocity. When the command slips, right-handed hitters can sit in the fastball-cutter lane, and the Angels have enough right-handed options to keep him working.

The Athletics’ bullpen is rested after Monday’s off day. The concern is mileage rather than availability: if Basso exits early, the relief corps may have to cover more than half the game before the preferred late-inning matchups arrive.

Angels have the steadier pitching map

The Angels have also been eliminated, leaving evaluation and the AL West basement as the remaining competitive markers. Their recent offense has been uneven, mixing two extra-inning wins with two shutout losses.

Yusei Kikuchi is scheduled to start and is prepared for a normal workload after returning from a long absence caused by left-shoulder tightness. His breaking-ball velocity offered a healthy sign last time out, but repeated walks turned an encouraging physical showing into a laborious evening.

The assignment is straightforward: get ahead, finish hitters and avoid handing free traffic to a depleted order. Kikuchi’s command can wobble, but he has a clearer path to useful length than Basso does.

The Angels can lean heavily right-handed against Basso, with Zach Neto, Mike Trout, Vaughn Grissom, Christian Moore and José Siri among the available options. That construction matters against a left-hander whose effectiveness depends on keeping hitters from hunting a narrow velocity band.

Los Angeles also has cleaner access to its preferred late-inning arms. Ben Joyce, Tayler Saucedo and Sam Bachman have had sufficient recovery time, although multi-inning reliever Mitch Farris carries the most notable recent workload.

Warm air, light wind and little help from the elements

First pitch at Sutter Health Park is set for 9:40 PM ET, beginning in twilight before becoming a full night game. Temperatures should sit in the low-to-mid 80s early, with almost no rain threat.

The park can become lively when the wind drives airborne contact toward the outfield, but the current forecast calls for only a light breeze. Warm, dry air remains helpful to well-struck balls, though this does not look like one of the park’s more extreme weather nights.

Both clubs had Monday off, so neither bullpen enters compromised by immediate fatigue. That neutralizes one concern, but it also strengthens the Angels’ advantage if the game reaches their preferred velocity arms before the Athletics can settle their middle innings.

The full-game edge sits with the Angels

The price treats the matchup as nearly level, but the roster and pitching paths are not. The Athletics are missing four central bats, while Basso’s managed role creates a realistic chance of an early call to the bullpen.

Los Angeles does not need an offensive eruption to justify the moneyline. A predominantly right-handed order can pressure Basso, and Kikuchi’s expected workload gives the Angels more room to sequence their bullpen without searching for emergency length.

The run line asks too much from an offense that has recently alternated late rallies with empty scoreboards. The straight win is the proper scout’s card here: fewer conditions, cleaner argument.

Kikuchi’s strike throwing is the main danger, especially in warm conditions with two unreliable defenses behind the starters. His recent walks can produce a crooked inning even against a depleted lineup.

The market is projecting fireworks in Sacramento tonight. But with both offenses coming off shutout losses and Oakland missing its best bats, this late-season clash looks primed for a quiet evening.
