Phillies keep finding another two-out answer
The Phillies hold a Wild Card position and remain within pursuit of Atlanta in the division. Friday’s extra-inning walk-off extended their winning streak even though the top of the order was quiet and a late lead disappeared.
Alec Bohm, Luis Arraez, Brandon Marsh and J.T. Realmuto kept rallies moving with doubles, walks and situational contact. That broader production matters against a young starter whose command can turn a clean inning into a long excavation project.
Andrew Painter is listed to start on five full days of rest. His revised changeup has become a credible weapon to both sides of the plate, but his opening-inning command vanished in Minnesota before he settled down and provided several more innings.
Bryce Harper has been managing knee soreness since returning to the outfield, although his availability is not currently in doubt, as detailed by mlb.com. The Phillies can use him at DH, but the wider defensive reshuffle around Arraez has already produced a few rough edges.
Cardinals have swing-and-miss stuff, but not much margin
The Cardinals are chasing the Wild Card group, and this season series carries tiebreaker weight. Their offense rallied repeatedly in Cincinnati and again Friday, with Jordan Walker and Joshua Báez both going deep, but the bullpen could not finish the job.
Quinn Mathews is expected to be recalled and start, although mlb.com still listed the Cardinals’ pitcher as TBD at the latest check. His activation requires a same-day roster move, so the assignment remains expected rather than fully official.
Mathews is also working on shorter rest after a demanding Monday appearance in Cincinnati. He struck out the first four hitters and generated misses with his fastball and breaking pitches, but walks and deep counts forced him to spend close to a full starter’s workload on four innings.
The relief picture behind him is the larger concern. Justin Bruihl supplied two innings Friday, Luis Gastelum worked the ninth and tenth, and Caleb Ferguson was used after the early departure of Hunter Dobbins.
Dobbins exited with right-forearm tightness shortly after Andre Pallante went to the injured list with elbow inflammation, another rotation blow covered by inquirer.com. Riley O’Brien and Ryan Fernandez offer fresher options, but the Cardinals are short on rested arms suited to absorb multiple middle innings.

Long counts point toward five Phillies runs
The matchup is less about Philadelphia ambushing Mathews than making him work for every out. Arraez can spoil pitches, Bohm is controlling the zone calmly, and the Phillies have enough right-handed platoon options to keep Mathews from settling into a simple left-on-left pattern.
Walks and extended counts are the pressure points. If Mathews repeats Monday’s inefficiency, the Phillies can reach the compromised middle of the Cardinals’ bullpen early and continue building innings without needing a parade of home runs.
That route is cleaner than relying on the full-game total because the Phillies still have usable relief alternatives and the wind offers mild resistance. It also avoids tying the bet to Painter’s volatile command or Philadelphia’s winning margin.
The main caveat is procedural: Mathews had not been made official at the latest check, and a different pitching arrangement could change the early matchup. Rain is another genuine interruption risk, particularly once either young arm has begun working.
